Mr. Jean Stern, the Executive Director of the Irvine Museum, was the judge at this year's Carmel Art Festival. This is just my opinion, but I think the 60 plein air artists that were competing (many of them considered some of the best of this era), painted especially well to impress our visiting judge. Here is a link to ALL the paintings that were entered - all painted within TWO days, Thursday and Friday, May 13 and 14!!! Click on the link http://www.carmelartfestival.org/SilentAuction2011.html
Art buyers were also suitably impressed. We had one couple who flew in from Richmond, VA for the event and ended up buying five paintings. We also had absentee bidders, mostly from throughout California, who emailed me to place bids for them.
Besides two gruelling days of painting, artists who won a prize were also in a 2-hour Quick Draw on Sunday. See Kevin Courter's winning painting of the beautiful sand dunes in the Monterey area. Another participating artist who won the "Artists Choice Award" in the main competition, Randall Sexton, produced this portrait in 2 hours. We also had Steven Whyte produce a sculpture during the several days of the festival. Here I caught him "losing his head", but it did end up back on the statue. Aspiring artists, kids, also had fun on Saturday producing their own kinds of art. And when you got tired, you could "shoot the breeze" with Albert Einstein on the $46,000 bench that was part of the "Sculpture In The Park" exhibit.
I have been involved with the Carmel Art Festival for 10 years now, half of that time as a board member. That also "entitles" me to be the webmaster, photographer, sales & marketing, and anything else that needs to be done. No, we don't get paid, we just do it for love of art. It helps that it is being held annually in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea. Each year I say "next year I will slow down" but then always get more involved the next year. So, I need to take one of Einstein's quotes to heart:
"I never think of the future. It comes soon enough." And by next year, I will be all eager to go again.
