Applications for plein air artists to enter the 2012 Carmel Art Festival

If you are a plein air artist and can paint TWO paintings in two days in and around Carmel, we invite you to apply to enter the 19th Annual Carmel Art Festival which will be held on May 17 to 20, 2011.

The Carmel Art Festival has been part of my life for the past twelve years, half of that time as a board member. We have some top contemporary California artists enter each year like Brian Blood and Kevin Courter. But artists come from all over, including Europe and Hawaii. Only 60 will be juried into the show, usually a few of them who have never been in before. Some of those who started out winning ribbons (and cash) in our festival, are now showing their work in very prestigious galleries. Especially Carmel-by-the-Sea gallery owners come and see what the new crop paints. It's wonderful to see how successful it is for all concerned. And the City loves it because it perpetuates the "artist colony" mystique.

Art collectors come from all over the country to purchase the paintings. These are not paintings that have hung in galleries or otherwise been gathering dust or made copies of. These are so "fresh", they are actually still wet.

The Carmel Art Festival is a non-profit organization which sponsors youth art. It is an all volunteer organization.

Oh, and below is the image that will be next year's poster. It is a painting called "Point Lobos" done by Joaquin Turner. and was awarded the "People's Choice" in the 2010 Carmel Art Festival.

Hella --- a great post to highlight a wonderful event.   Who knows who might enter and win.  Nice poster too.

Michael: Visitors build their vacations around this event, we have found. That's why we have information about the Carmel Art Festival up so early as far as the events are concerned. Same with art galleries in Carmel, they plan special events as well.
