November Thankful Contest Day #11 - Frank Lloyd Wright Carmel House

Did you know that there is a Frank Lloyd Wright house here in Carmel-by-the-Sea? It is a very distinctive oceanfront home. Better known as the Clinton Walker Residence, it was built in 1948 of stone with a copper roof and hexagon-based floor plan. A central chimney bears the weight of the roof which allows for almost unbroken casement windows on the ocean side.

I have always wanted to go inside, but it is a private residence so no tours are allowed, unfortunately. However, I've walked the little beach to its north and, at low tide, climbed around the ocean side looking for shells.

It was the location of a movie in 1959, "A Summer Place" (ostensibly on the East Coast) which actually mentions the fact that it was a Frank Lloyd Wright house.

SO I AM THANKFUL THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL OCEANFRONT HOME IS STILL THERE FOR PEOPLE TO SEE AS THEY WALK OR DRIVE ALONG SCENIC ROAD AT THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

Hella, Wouldn't it be fun to be invited inside and get to see how the home has been transformed over the years?

Hella, Maybe you can hang around on the beach and meet the owners and tell them how you admire the house...they may invite you inside!

Dan: I agree, it is a most beautiful area with its Comstock cottages, excellent shopping and dining in the village, and its fabulous beach.

Kathy: That's a favorite part of the ocean where you can see the sweep of Carmel Beach all the way to Pebble Beach.

Debbie: I will have to finagle that somehow.

Christine: I've always wondered what it was like inside.

Hella ~ Are you also familiar with the nearby property, known as the Butterfly house?  It is certainly a landmark and is just as famous as the FLW home; family friends lived there in the 60's.  The views from both of these homes sweep from Pt Lobos to Cypress Point in Pebble Beach ... spectacular!

(I think it's funny to hear people referring to Carmel adding on the "by-the-Sea" because none of us who grew up there ever did!)

Maureen: Yes, I know it well, in fact, I think I will feature it today on my blog, it's that exciting. Did you know it is on the market? Only $19.2 Million!!

Yes I saw that it had been renovated, they added back the swimming pool and put it on the market!  The woman who lived there for many years was an artist and good friend of my mother-in-law; she painted a darling portrait of my daughter when she was just 3 years old :-)  Her grandson was a good tennis player and we knew him from The Beach Club.

Maureen: How great is that! What was the artist's name? Note: I'll be putting more photos on the next few blogs. Hope it brings back more great memories. We'll have to meet here sometime.

Hella -- the family was the Van Loben Sels ... Page's grandmother was a noted artist in the area and she was also a very interesting woman.  I wish I could remember her first name! I recall that she painted my daughter's portrait when she was well over 85 years old!

I think you may be referring to Della Walker, who married my great great uncle, Jim van Loben Sels.

The Clinton Walker house was built for her by FLW.

I was lucky enough to visit the house many times when I was a little girl in the 60s.

At the time it had only one bedroom, no pool and in the living room a huge fireplace where you had to put large beams from the beach upright.

We would help uncle Jim with carrying the beams to the house and we were always a bit worried that the fire would burn the house down...

Della had her paintings hanging on the few walls available, because most of the house was glass.

Hope it helps.

I was a friend of Alma Walker Hearst, daughter of Della Walker van Lobensels. Alma told the story of Prince Phillip knocking on the door one day and said "I am Phillip of England and an admirer of FLW . I would very much like to see the house"
The family was not in, the maid answered the door but would not allow Prince Phillip in the house.

What great history this house has. I really appreciate the comments.
