Plein Air artists arrive for the Carmel Art Festival May 16-19, 2013

Tonight the 60 plein air artists arrive who have been juried into the 20th Annual Carmel Art Festival in Carmel-by-the-Sea for the May 16-20, 2013 event.

They will be checking in at the Carmel Art Association on Dolores between 5th & 6th, where they will get their blank canvasses officially stamped.

Artists sign in at the Carmel Art Festival

Yes, they start out with blank canvasses and spread all over Monterey County for the next two days to paint the scenery. They will then each submit two of these new paintings into the competition to be judged on Saturday morning, May 18.

We have a map where you will most likely find them painting.

And you would think that this is a lot to do for these talented artists. However, most of them paint at least one or two more!

As an example of what they paint, see the 2012 "People's Choice Award" painting by Gretha Lindwood called "Carmel Estuary" which became the 2013 Carmel Art Festival Poster.

Brad: Yes, you should. You will find some of the best modern Plein Air artists who come from all over the country and Canada. Sometimes we even have entries from other continents. See map where they are most likely to paint.

Hella: What a neat idea for a festival!  The 2012 People's Choice Award winner is especially impressive, knowing it was completed within a day or two- There must be some very talented artists there!  Thanks for sharing!  :)

I love the passion that you describe what goes on in Carmel. I'm sure you will enjoy most of the artwork.

Hella, I have just got to ask, you have been there for awhile so what part on you playing in the Art Festival Lady?

Andrew: Collectors fly and drive in from all over the country to purchase their paintings. And if you can't be there, we have ABSENTEE BIDDING - check out the website how that works.

Joe: Only my feet give me grief; but I have a great pair of walking shoes this year.

Debbie: I am one of 3 Board Members of this non-profit event. I'm the one who, among other things, coordinates everything with the dozens of galleries in town who have their own events which we promote, I also trouble shoot with the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea to make sure we comply with the many ordinances, plus update the website which is our main conduit for information, photography, and oversee the absentee bidding. I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of stuff. Oh, and coordinate the Sculpture-in-the-Park event. We close Mission Street and Devendorf Park for our event. It's a pretty big deal which brings hundreds if not thousands of people to Carmel every year. But I'll write about it some more in the coming days.

Dear Hella,

Thank you to you and all who volunteer to make this event a favorite of mine. I have been fortunate enough to have been invited to be a participating artist the past two years. It was a particular thrill to have received the People's Choice Award for "Carmel River Estuary" and to see the image on this year's poster. You live in a beautiful area and I love painting it.

Best regards,
