60 plein air artists will be submitting two paintings each into the Carmel Art Festival between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM Friday, May 17. Judging will be Saturday morning and winners in various categories will be announced by 10:00AM Saturday, May 18, 2013.
And, yes, they are still WET.
Many an elbow or purse has brushed against a painting accidentally before it was safely hung on the artist's space on Mission Street here in Carmel-by-the-Sea. I am actually surprised that we don't have more problems. Luckily, the paintings dry pretty fast since they are hung outside in the open air for 24 hours before they are handled by their new owners.
Also, the festival organizers have made an agreement with Al Asuncion and Natalie Sweet who have a mailing establishment in the "Court of the Fountains" in Carmel-by-the-Sea to bring many boxes to the festival to safeguard the paintings and, in many cases, mail the paintings to their new owners. (Al & Natalie's telephone number is 831-624-1800).
Who come to bid on these paintings?
Collectors and supporters of the Carmel Art Festival come every year to bid on paintings submitted to the festival. And, not only do most of the 120 paintings find new homes through the silent auction held on Saturday, May 18, but artists sell additional paintings, new/wet paintings, on Sunday, May 19. These are the ones they also painted this week on Thursday, Friday & Saturday but were not submitted into the competition.
WHAT YOU CAN SEE & DO FRIDAY:
It's not too late to watch the artists paint. Usually, on the second day, they come closer to Carmel-by-the-Sea, often at the Basilica Mission or Carmel Beach.
Starting about 5 PM, the newly painted art will arrive on Mission Street next to Devendorf Park. It's fun to watch them come in, see what the subject is, and be hung under the artists' names in the tent area. The artists don't even tell each other where they will paint during these two days. That evening, you can start making bids, but remember, the auction does not end until 6 PM on Saturday, May 18, 2013.
IN DEVENDORF PARK FRIDAY:
The popular Nick Williams Trio will be playing in Devendorf Park between 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
Throughout the day you can watch sculpture demonstrations by the Bennett Sculpture Gallery.
Seven galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea have sculpture exhibited on the park's lawn.
Plus, you can purchase Posters, current and past ones, and tee shirts, totes and hats at the Information Tent.
AND IN GALLERIES THROUGHOUT CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA.
Individual galleries are holding their own events to coincide with the festival. I will be linking the PROGRAM here later today in PDF format which lists those we know about. In the meantime, here is a list of many primary galleries here in Carmel-by-the-Sea www.carmelartgalleries.com
