What am I doing this weekend? Shopping for my new office.

This is not just any old office that I have just leased, this is a Carmel-by-the-Sea office. There are expectations, ahem. And what images do you get in your head when you hear this name? Check out my last post, this is the city that was named #6 in the US that people want to visit. Lots of international clientele come here, lots of Silicon Valley buyers are buying the upscale homes. Plus the locals need to be impressed, those that will be (yes, they will) refer clients to me.

So what do they expect to see when they see my office? Certainly not your usual office all cluttered with functional furniture and obscure art on the walls. No, no, no. So here goes what I'm thinking:

1. Art:

I have a fabulous painting by a Norwegian artist (1886 - 1936) who is represented with quite a few of his works in the National Norwegian Museum. It is an ocean view with the "midnight" sun. Very stunning, and not what the normal galleries have here. Here, they like Early California or American. So this will definitely stand out.

One part of a wall, the part earmarked for my clientele who are interested in buying or selling property in Hawaii, will have several framed prints of 60s Matson Liner menus. These are very collectible, nostalgic, and certainly very romantic. They are also considered "art".,

2. Furniture:

My office is not that large, but it is bright, with north and south facing windows. It has a great light sand colored Berber carpet and white walls. I plan to get one antique yet functional desk where I can sit and work on the computer.

The general office furniture will consist of one glass topped table, very modern, with seating for 4. And a big cut glass vase with fresh flowers. This table will stay pristine unless clients are actually in the office signing documents.

I also want two very comfortable chairs for clients who come in and want to stay awhile, discuss their real estate needs. I DO NOT PLAN TO SIT BEHIND A DESK. There are several major storefront/retail real estate offices here in very expensive rent locations, which all have the agent sitting BEHIND a desk, separating them from possible clients. What's that all about? My feeling is, I want to bond, they are my guests in the office, stay awhile.

Under the window next to the entrance, I will have an étagère of open shelves displaying some interesting ornamental items. The top will be at the level of the window sill so that I can have a display of what I do. Yes, that little piece of marketing must be there for those who come to the door, day or night! But tastefully done, probably in antique frames!

3. Coffee, tea or stronger:

If any such thing is needed, we can step outside, down a few stairs and into the courtyard at JACK LONDON'S. Here, there are cozy tables with firepits, and the clients can order anything they want.

4. Monitor/flat screen:

Yes, that will need to come as well, but if it is mounted on the wall, opposite those comfortable chairs, it will fit well into the decor. They have them in white, don't they?

So there you have it. Let's see how it actually turns out. You will need to wait for photos until I launch the office officially, once the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea has inspected it (they told me no problem) and the California Real Estate Commission has transferred my business license (again, no problem).

The best thing? I will be going in and out of antique shops and other furniture outlets. Shopping in Carmel-by-the-Sea, there is nothing more enjoyable.

This Carmel-by-the-Sea office sounds like a beauty. Make sure you have something enticing in the entry/window to draw visitors in.

Hella:  Just as we must think about staging homes ... staging definitely can benefit our businesses too.  You have wonderful advantages being offered, given your office and city location.  And it sounds like you have it well thought out too. Hope you find the success you've planned so well for ...

Will: I have this plan in my head, now I need to fiend the items.

Noah: Oh, yes, photos will come.

Rebecca: There will certainly be a grand opening in the future and you are definitely invited. Or stop by anytime.

Pat: This was just the right time for me, and in the right location. I can't be happier.

Michelle: Absolutely, am working on that now.

Gene: I am in the middle of a lot of businesses I have dealt with since 1995! And it's fun to make my "rounds" to visit them, go have coffee with one or the other, meet them later at the beach for that famous sunset, or a glass of wine, etc. etc. - it's just such a wonderful place.

Roger: thank you, it's certainly a beautiful place.

Debbie: Carmel, with it's casual elegance, and Hawaii, with all that OCEAN, two of my favorite places in the world.

Chris Ann: Can't wait to have it all pulled together and, yes, will take lots of photos.

Silvie: There are so many fabulous places to shop, I know I will find what I want.

George: It can't help but be good, with all my friends cheering me on.
